Walk to Remember: Honoring Our Loved Ones and Strengthening Our Community

As the autumn air begins to settle in, our community prepares to come together for a day of remembrance, reflection, and connection. We are thrilled to invite you to the 27th annual Walk to Remember 2024, hosted in partnership with Bereaved Families of Ontario - Toronto. This year's (free to attend) event will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the serene Lakeside Park in Mississauga (2268 Lakeshore Rd West).

A Day of Commemoration and Connection

Walk to Remember is more than just a fundraising event; it is a heartfelt gathering where we honor, remember, and celebrate our loved ones who have passed away. Whether you choose to walk, roll, or run, every step taken is in tribute to their memory. This special day offers an opportunity for our community to come together, share stories, and find solace in knowing that we are not alone in our grief.

Each year, participants find comfort and healing through the shared experience of commemorating those we have lost. Walk to Remember allows us to create a supportive environment where everyone can express their emotions and cherish the memories of their loved ones.

The Power of Community

In a world that often feels divided, events like Walk to Remember remind us of the incredible power of community. Being surrounded by others who understand our journey can be profoundly healing. This event is a testament to the strength we find in unity, as we support one another through both the joyous and challenging moments of life. Activities for Mind, Body, and Soul

Throughout the day, participants can engage in various activities that promote wellness and healing while supporting your holistic well-being. From physical activities to creative outlets, there is something for everyone. These activities not only honor our loved ones but also help us take care of ourselves as we navigate our grief.

Imagine starting your day with a calming stretch by the lake, followed by a stroll surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of community. Participate in our planned activities, listen to soothing music, or join in group discussions that provide a safer space to share your stories. These activities aim to offer holistic support, ensuring that everyone leaves the event feeling seen, heard, rejuvenated, and connected.

Your Support is Vital

As a small charity, donations play a crucial role in our operation, contributing significantly to most of our programming, including our support groups and individual supports. The funds raised through Walk to Remember are essential to ensuring that we can continue providing the support, resources, and programs our community needs. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a significant impact. Your generosity allows us to create equitable spaces, offer affirming programming, and provide vital support to our community. This year, we hope to raise $50,000 to sustain our efforts and expand our reach.

Who Will You Honor?

We invite you to raise funds or make a donation in honor of your loved ones. Who will you walk, run, or roll for? Who will you remember? Your participation and donations are not only a tribute to those who have passed but also a lifeline to those who need support. Each contribution helps us continue our mission and extend our reach to more individuals and families.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We want to acknowledge the land on which we gather, and where the Centre for Grief and Healing (BFO-H/P) operates. This land has been and is still inhabited by many Indigenous Peoples since the last Ice Age which was 13,000 years ago. In particular, we acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek-Ojibway/Chippewa, Huron-Wendat, and Haudenosaunee peoples. The land that is home to the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people. We are grateful to now be on the land that is the land of Indigenous Peoples since time began.

The land we are presently on is under the stewardship of the Mississaugas of the Credit, who are the signatories of the treaty and holders of the area. We recognize that the land we are on was taken away through colonization, oppression, and expropriation. In the hopes for a better future and building relationships, we recognize, require, and honour what is in the truth and reconciliation report and the calls to action. We acknowledge and are grateful for having the privilege of being where we are, for this land, and for the Indigenous Peoples who have and continue to inhabit this land.

This Land Acknowledgment was created in collaboration with Indigenous Elder, Cat Criger.
